Many people have compared him to De Niro for his ability to take on an endless diversity of characters; to Mick Jagger for his song-and-dance numbers; and to Stallone and Jean-Claude Van Damme for his action scenes.

Amitabh was born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh India. His father Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a famous Hindi Poet while his mother Teji Bachchan was house wife born in Lyallpur (now in Pakistan) whose  new name is Faisalabad.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan wrote a poem on his Birthday.

His orignal name was Inqalab given by his father who was a patriotic poet and very much inspired be a famous slogan Inqalab Zindabad during the Indian Independence struggle.

Later on, Harivansh Rai Bachchan changed his son’s name at suggestion of his fellow poet. New name was Amitabh which means “Light that would never go off”.

After completing his education from Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, he moved to Calcutta to work for shipping firm Shaw and Wallace.

IN the 1970s

Amitabh Bachchan's third film, Anand (1971), fetched him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor for his sensitive performance as an idealistic doctor. In 1971 and 1972, he appeared in  Bombay To Goa co-starring Aruna Irani and Shatrughan Sinha. But it was not until 1973's Zanjeer that Mr Bachchan struck box office gold.

,Amitabh  appeared arguably the greatest Bollywood film ever, Sholay, which is based on The Seven Samurai. He later became known for thrillers such as Sharaabi and Coolie. It was on the set of the latter that he almost died.
