Sunmeet Kaur Sawhney, a Mumbai-based housewife, became the winner of the Kaun Banega Crorepati Rs 5-crore jackpot. It is for teh first time taht a woman has won such an amount on KBC.


Bollywood megastar and KBC host Amitabh Bachchan on Saturday tweeted, "We have a 5 cr winner on KBC ... last night Sunmeet Kaur from Mumbai cracked the most difficult questions on KBC and won 5 cr !!! Yo Hooooooo !! The first woman to accomplish this feat ever in the history of the game in India."

"We have had 1 cr winners but never a 5 cr winner ! Incredible !! What a game she played ! In this atmosphere of crime and discrimination against women, this has come as a compelling event ... Big B added.

On the woman in India, Amitabh Bachchan posted, SIT UP AND TAKE NOTICE OF THE WOMEN IN OUR COUNTRY .. THEY ARE HALF OUR STRENGTH, AND INCREASING IN NUMBERS BY THE MINUTE !!!! WE MUST PROTECT THEM, GIVE THEM THERE PLACE IN SOCIETY, HONOUR THEM AND LOOK UPON THEM WITH DIGNITY AND STANDING !!

After winning the show, Sunmeet Kaur, who is originally from Punjab, said "I cannot believe that 13 questions have turned my life around."

"I couldn't believe that I won! Mr. Bachchan had to come and hug me for me to believe that I have won Rs.5 crore. My husband also had to come and tell me so," she added.

36-year-old Sunmeet Kaur who moved to Mumbai after her marriage recently faced some financial crisis. She had to undergo three surgeries and her husband chose to stay at home to take care of her. After her health improved, a HSC pass Kaur started taking tuitions at home.

“That’s how I returned to textbooks and studies, which helped me answer all those questions on the show,” she said. “The rest is luck and God’s grace.”

Kaur hasn’t decided what to do with the prize money.

"I want to sponsor some rituals of our Punjabi tradition. So, a part of the amount will go there. We will decide what to do with the rest of it later," Kaur said.

 lives in Mumbai with her husband and children in a rented house. 

Earlier, names like Harshavardhan Navate, Sushil Kumar have made headlines for being the crorepatis on KBC.

The episode featuring her Kaur's victory was shooted on January 4 and will be aired on January 11 and January 12, 2013.
