Ganesh Chaturthi celebration begins on Sept 11

The 10-day long festival Ganesh Chaturthi aka Vinayaka Chaturthi is observed with great festivity and fervor. The Ganesh Chaturthi Festival 2010 falls on September 11.

During the celebration, every household in Mumbai install a clay idol of Lord Ganesha. The Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival to mark the Birthday of Lord Ganesha, who is widely worshiped as the God of wisdom, prosperity and end of atrocities.

The festival was started as the mega public event in Maharashtra and its adjoining states by the renowned freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. In a bid to bridge the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins, Tilak described the deity Ganesha as God of everybody.

Another reason behind the public celebration was to unite people against the British rule.

The Ganesh Chaturthi festival is the family festival of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The festival starts on shukla chaturthi (Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada) and ends on Anata Chaturthi. The clay idols of Lord Ganesha is submerged in lack or rivers on this day.

On this occasion, people bring Ganesha idol and offer prayers with great devotion.
