The passing away of Kanhaiya Lal Nandan, a great Hindi writer and journalist, is a loss to Hindi literature and journalism, nay, the whole nation. He was great not only as a litterateur but also as a man. He had been on dialysis for a long time; but even this serious health problem failed to rob him of his inordinate zest for life. I remember, we were sitting together at a friend's family function in Haridwar about a year or so ago. When I asked him about his health, he said he had to be on dialysis twice a week. Then he described the whole process of dialysis he had to go through. The nonchalant way he did it left me so surprised. I felt moved, but his own voice showed no sign of weakness. Well, that is how the great live, smiling even in the face of death.
