The whistleblower website Wikileaks is all set to demolish the secrecy of famous Swiss Bank.
Wikileaks will expose the names of several tax defaulters very soon. The Wikileaks founder Jullian Assange has on Monday received two CDs, containing names of more than 2000 politicians and bevy of multinational companies.
The CDs contain secret accounts of around 40 politicians and bosses of multinational companies. Ex-banker Rudolf Elmer handed CDs in a press conference in London to Assange. Rudolf Elmer had worked for Swiss Bank’s associated group Julius Bar for eight years in the Caymen Islands and was fired in 2002.
After receiving the CDs, Assange said that the names of leading tax defaulters will be released soon after verification.
Showering praise on Rudolf Elmer, Assange said, “He is a bonafide whistleblower and it is our duty to extend him support.
Assange said that he will examine the authenticity of CDs and modous operandi of black money depositor. “After examination, the information will be made available to British Serious Fraud Office and Financial Investigative agencies. Later it will be made public to expose the defaulters and money launders.”
Speaking at the press conference, Elmer said that the CDs contain names of 40 politicians from Asia, Europe and Africa.
However, it is yet to be known that how many Indians are named in the secret disks. But unconfirmed sources claim a few names do exist in the tax evasion list.
On the other hand, the Opposition has asked government to release the names of Indian account holders in the Swiss Bank. The party also claimed that the information had already been provided to the government by Germany.
"We are interested in the names from India and the entire country expects that those who have looted public money and invested abroad in Swiss bank accounts, their names should also be exposed," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Rudolf Elmer, a former employee of Swiss bank Julius Baer, leaked details of 2,000 high net-worth people holding accounts in the bank to Wikileaks. The individuals involved are from US, Britain and Asia.
Prasad alleged that the UPA government had shown reluctance to reveal these names to the Supreme Court though "Germany has already sent the names to it".
"Therefore, we expect that this should come about quickly and let the nation know who has done what service for the nation or personal enrichment," he said.
BJP has launched a campaign against the Manmohan Singh government for failing to keep its promise of initiating action on bringing back black money stashed abroad within 100 days of coming to power.
The principal opposition has demanded that the government should at least make the names of these Indian account holders public and wondered why the government was not doing so.
